Ideling fast, please help!

Ok, I have a 87 caperice classic v8 305 so on so on.

My problem is that she is idling fast. She is the car I use to get around but the last two winters she has been parked in less then ideal conditions and components in the engine compartment are starting to corrode. I will not even mention the body rust.

Now she is dieseling and stalls quite a bit while right when first started cold. If driven for a few hours she will has been starting to stall/run ruff decreasing from 60mph when reach 30mph breaking.

When she dieseling it is continuous will not cut out unless I shift into reverse then while the idling decreased for the transmition, then turn off the ignition. When I do this she stops fine other wise she would dieseling till she runs out of gas. (trying to flud then engen only make it diseal faster)

Now so fare we have looked at the chock and it is working fine the solenoid is still good to. There is not extra tension on the throttle linkage preventing it from depressing i.e. the spring is still good. We hit carb with carb cleaner but that did not help with this problem. The thermostatic air cleaner we dw-40 and got working again (did nothing to help) and we dw-40 almost all the electrical connection to get rid of corrosion. the Idle speed solenoid is not engaged/causing a problem as in it is not engaged (not sure what it is for maybe extra reves for ac that is not used cuz it still is set up for the old stuff)

Now before it sat for this past winter she idled fast when you first started her but then she'd slow down after a min or some reves like she is sapos to. It is like that but she never slows.

We were thinking that she got some corrosion some place that is binding things up maybe with the throttle position sensor assembly or something.

We are delving into things with caution for it is getting in to some delicate inner working and are reluctant to bring her to a mechanic. So we were wondering if you had any ideas cuz we are out of them.

She is an 87 caprice classic 305 5L V8 with stock parts (if I’m using that term right) with a what we believe is a typical Rochester M4MC/E4Me series carburetor.

If you did not give up on reading by this point any help would be great.

I have had her for 6 year now with 70,000 when I first got her and she is only up to 90,000 she is my first car and is only a year younger then I am. I really hate to see her in this state. Wish I had enough money to restore her but that’s not the case.

Again any help would be great.

Edit: i though of egnition timing but we could not find the timing plate on the housing. Any ideas where it is? I really hope it is hard to find and not that it fell off.

Re: Ideling fast, please help!

North east huh? Anywhere by me (Rochester NY)?
Anyway, Your choke pull-off is working properly, obviously, but there's another part associated with that that got stuck on my '85 Caprice wagon. It's a little lever looking thing on the passenger side of the carb. It turns on a cam that raises the idle while the engine is cold and slowly releases as it warms up. In my wagon that got stuck, so it'd always idle very high. I kind of flicked it with my finger ot get it to slow the idle down. I never bothered to get it un-stuck because the only time I ever drove it was down the road to make sure the tranny was good and then into my garage where it shut off for the last time before it was stripped of parts, crushed and recycled.

Check your vacuum lines, all of them.

I'm a man of few words tonight.

Re: Ideling fast, please help!

It sounds like it's not kicking down and stays up on fast idle. I would douse the fast idle cam and all the carb linkage with carb spray, work everything by hand a few times to loosen it up. If it still persists, while the engine is running, unplug the electric choke unit and see what happens.

Re: Ideling fast, please help!

Brockport huh? Thats about 10 minutes from where I live (Right on the edge of Spencerport). Yeah winter's are killers for these cars (or any at that). I drove my Caprice through one winter, but protected it bu covering the undercarriage with thick grease, and putting the same grease under all the trim, especially inbetween the trim and the body metal around the wheel wells. But now the car isn't seeing any more winters. I'ts pretty much rust free aside from a bad spot on the chassis (will be fixed soon) and I want to keep it that way.
