i need a new exhaust system

i was rotating my tires the other day and while on the driver side rear tire i noticed that the aftermarket muffler the previous owner had put on was welded on by a monkey with a blow torch but i had not had problems with it so i let it be. but today i noticed my exhaust was a bit louder than i was used to so i had my friend rev the car while i checked out the exhaust and what do ya know...there is a leak at the welds on the muffler.

so what im wondering is what is a good exhaust set up that is not going to break the bank cuz im only 17 and working at mcdonalds for minimum wage. i want something with atleast 2 1/4 inch exhaust with a nice deep sounding muffler and a big tip, but nothing that sounds riced out. i already have a header and want to complete the exhaust setup. this is just what im looking for but im no expert on this stuff so if you have a better setup in mind let me know, i just want to get some ideas and prices in mind.

i will work on getting some pics of the hidious welds i found so you can see exactly how bad this looks, i think you will get a good laugh out of it.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

First, you'll need a high-flow cat and a resonator (preferably 18in glasspack). Between both of those will run you less the $100 depending on from where you order from. Now you need to deside on piping and a muffler. You can probably find a pretty good muffler for about $60-$80. And for the piping, it would be cheapest just to piece one together yourself. All together, it should run you under $300 easily for the whole system.

BTW...please get an oval muffler and not the classic ricer coffee can.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

I wouldn't install the system yourself unless YOU are going to weld it. Don't use clamps, clamps suck and you'll most likely have leaks all over the place. As for a system, you're not gonna find a non-raspy muffler with a big tip unless you use a resonator and even then it still might not have the low tone you want. If you want a good system that's not too expensive go with a Dynomax thrush glasspack, the longest one you fit in the system, like Deadblade said 18" should work but if you can go bigger, do it. Highflow cat as stated and a Dynomax Turbo sport muffler with the tip of your choice. You can get then at ww.summitracing.com and the non-stainless steal ones are really cheap. They're also really good mufflers, really close to a straight through one.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

ok, so im looking through summit racing's web page and i realized i have no clue what im looking for. i need some specs to go by cuz i have no clue what size stuff will fit on my car. it is asking things like inlet size of stuff and outlet size of stuff and i dont know if i want 2 1/4" or 2 1/2", what is a good size? what length of stuff should i get? and what piping do i need?

im a complete noob at this jsyk, im one of those kinds of people that needs very detailed steps to do something for the first time but then after the first time i can basicly do it with my eyes closed, but since this is the first time im doing exhaust i need help.

and im planing on having my uncle do the welds cuz he welds car and space shuttle parts for a living

thanks for the help

Re: i need a new exhaust system

Well thats good that you have someone that knows how to weld. 2 1/4" should be a good size for piping. So for the inlet and outlet, you want 2 1/4".

Resonator:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
With it being 31" long, that will save you a little money because you wont need to buy as much piping.

Cat:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
MagnaFlow highflow cat

Muffler:

Basicly, take your choice. Alot to choose from.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

That resonator might be too big to fit in the length of the system. It's 31" overall. But if it will fit then get that shiz.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

yeah i dont think you will be able to fit 31 inches inbetween your back bumber and your rear axel and still be able to put a nice tip on the end with out it sticking out half a foot in the back

Re: i need a new exhaust system

I had a 2 1/2" ebay cat-back with a 4" greddy muffler, sounded pretty good. Costed me like 180 bucks for all, install was like 60.

Now it's 2 1/2" turbo-back straight through no cat to this above system..

You should just wait a few months and get the whole system. Racing header, downpipe, hi-flow cat, no resonator wtf???, muffler

Full exhaust system FTW!!! lol

nothing really besides that a resonator is skinny.

ya, i wasnt sure if the 31" would fit, but I figured it was one of the longest ones, so I posted it. i believe theyre next longest one is 25" or something around there. that one will work...

He says he already has a header, and if he doesn't have a resonator, it will sound really raspy.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

no, you need both. a resonator to go after the cat and then the muffler goes at the very end of the piping.

Re: i need a new exhaust system

check out this, it is basicly the setup and sound i want but i would get a different muffler cuz this one really dampers the sound, i would get one that is almost strait through
