Fuel smell around car

Ok, I have a 99 Alero, and I smell fuel around the car and moslty near the rear. I have crawled under it and see nothing. The bottom of the tank is dry, and no lines appear to be leaking. I can see the tank vent, a short plastic tube a few inches long on top of the tank. I am wondering it it is missing something like a charcoal canister to clean/absorb the vapors? We had a problem with a shop not too long ago and that's about when this new problem started. My wife does not want to drive it beacuse we have a new born. Please any ideas?
