97 Golf 1.6 GL just cuts out when driving

Hi, I am wondering if someone can help me fix a problem on 97 Golf 1.6 GL. The issue is that when I am driving along, my car completely cuts out for absolutely no reason. It does not matter what speed I am traveling (it's happened between 20 - 70 mph) also I can have been driving for 5 minutes or even 2 hours. It's very dangerous when traveling a speed as the power steering stops. Most times I can retry the ignition and it restarts first time, however sometimes it just will not restart until I wait for five minutes, then the car is all fine like nothing has happened. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me, I am a complete novice with cars so if possible can you keep any answers from being not too technical.

hi there i have very same problem and after changing just about every thing that could be changed i had a fuel pressure test which found the fuel pump to be faulty replaced fuel pump everything fine now

Hi, thanks you for your answer, it's a relief to know that I am not the only person who has / had this issue. As soon as I get the fuel pump replaced I will post the results. Once again thank you for your help
