99 windstar will not turn over

The wife's windystar is having starting issues.

Came out to start it this evening and heard the clicking of the starter solenoid. Knowing that the battery was really weak, I asked for a jump from another driver and that did not help. In fact when we got done there was no more clicking from the solenoid.

So, I replaced the battery, hoping it was just REALLY bad. But we still have no start. All the lights come on but when you turn the key there is nothing from the starting circuit. I tried moving the shift lever to make sure it wasn't the neutral safety switch.

Anybody run across this before?

Thanks
Bill

Check the transmission range selector. That IS the neutral safety switch. Known problem on Fords. Many times it's corrosion, other times it's a blown resistor. It sits on top of the transmission. If there's no corrosion, you'll need a digital ohm meter to check out the resistance values.

Check the starter motor. Have someone try cranking the engine while you tap the starter with the wooden end of the hammer. Sometimes you get a dead spot in the armature and it just takes a little tap to move it enough to start it cranking. It is only a temporary fix. You may be able to do it a dozen times or maybe not at all. Its worth a try.

Re: 99 windstar will not turn over

It turned out to be the starter. However, I had the work done at a local Ford dealer vs having it towed home for $100 and then installing the starter myself.

Total bill $336 and change. $198 of that was the starter...an A/C Delco one at that!

Nex time I'll pay the tow and change it myself.

... for $38 difference .... you came out ahead, I think!

... and with the damage you could have gotten with a poor tow job .... WAY AHEAD!
