buying a used car from a dealership

I was thinking instead of buying a car for a couple thousand at a auction i could go to the dealership and buy a more reliable car. It was going used of course but I am young so If i got full coverage it would be high. So i was wondering if I bought a car for 5000 to 7000 could I just get liability?

It depends on what coverages your state dictates you need to carry. Most of the vehicles I owned in the past mainly had liability coverage as they were too old to have collision and comp on them to make it economically worthwhile. The best thing to is talk over your needs and concerns with an insurance agent you feel comfortable with. They can let you know what you minimally need and maybe offer some advice as to what limits to carry and other coverages that might be helpful.

you know buying a used car at a dealership is kind of stupid. They always over price by a couple of thousand which is a lot when you dont have much to spend.

Buying from a used dealer doesn't mean it's more reliable. Auctions are actually kinda nice cuz you get much better deals there. A good deal at a used car dealer usually means that there is an issue(s) with it.

You probably could get just liability (full coverage is usually required if you finance) but check what you are required to have in your state.

Re: buying a used car from a dealership

Plus, most used car dealers get their vehicles from auctions anyways. In the past 20 years, we have bought many vehicles from a auction here in Ontario called the Toronto Auto Auction, and we have not had an issue with any of them.

Why pay $5,000 from a dealer when you can get for $2,500-3,000 at the auction?

Re: buying a used car from a dealership

I agree that buying a used car at dealer can be kind of risky. Car dealers make most of their money on used cars, since the values are so varied.

I have started a resource that tracks the ACTUAL prices people paid for cars and whether the cars were from dealers or not.

Re: buying a used car from a dealership

If you don't want to buy at an auction, try checking out the auto trader book or website. But be sure to get a carfax.com account.

I would never go to a dealer unless you're buying a new car.
