02' Error code P0171

Test says Bank 1 is too lean. Mechanic says change fuel filter before replacing MAF. Has anyone done this and could offer any tips? I need to know if the fuel tank needs to be dropped, or can I access somewhere else. Part is only $16, would like to do it myself if possible. I appreciate any info in advance. Thanks.

Very easy to change the filter. It took me 30 min. The fuel filter is located by rear, paasanger side, wheel--there is a plastic cover--take it off and filter is there. Once you see it , it's kind of self explanatory.

Check vacuum hoses under intake manifold for cracks/ leaks. Check large breather vacuum hose at rear of valve cover (there is a recall for this at vw dealer) check vacuum hose between coolant resivour and intake manifold for cracks/leaks. ALso check 1/4" vacuum hoses at front of intake manifold and at back of manifold going to secondary air combi valve at rear of cylinder head
