94 Ranger Intermittent No Start

I have a real head banging problem with my 4.0 L '94 Ranger (5 speed manual). Intermittentantly it wont start after I drive it and park it. Just a click and the starter motor whirring when turning the key. Like it is not getting any gas, it just wont turn over. If I let it sit for a few hours it starts just fine. I replaced the fuel pump, and fuel filter but that did not solve the problem. (Battery and clutch is new too but problem still persists). Would an OBD 1 or 2 Analyzer work for me? Any ideas to what might be the problem? Ate wits end .. Mark

check to see if the electrical connections at the fuse box under the hood is good.

Re: 94 Ranger Intermittent No Start

Sounds like your starter solenoid not working inermittently. The whirring sound you hear is the starter turning with no load because the solenoid gear was not engaged. Remove your starter and have it checked out. If the solenoid is bad, might as well get a new starter. They are not that expensive. I don't believe there is an OMB indication for starter solenoid problem

Re: 94 Ranger Intermittent No Start

If the engine turns over and doesn't start, check your fuel pump relay and the relay adjacent to it in the fuse block. I believe it is called EEG Power relay. The power to the fuel pump must go through both these relays.

if these are still good the wires to the fuse box can cause issues also. alot of times the pigtail on the side was "bumped" and this will cause loss of power to the fuel pump.

Thanks for the reply. I am sorry when I said the starter motor whirrs. I should have said the starter forces the the engine to turn over but there appears to be no combustion.

GCDAN, I think you may be onto the answer here. I'll test the fuel pump relay and the EEG power relay this weekend.
