Angry EGR Solenoid

I have a 1991 Vette and sometimes after driving for about 30 minutes (or maybe doesn't come on at all) the Service Engine light comes on. After I shut it off it doesn't come back on until I drive it awhile or might not come back . I took it to a Dealer and they said the code showed it was the EGR. So I decided to try another smaller Garage and they said the EGR was fine and it was actually the EGR Solenoid, but then said they couldn't find the part anywhere. The GM part number is 1997195 and the AC Delco part number is 214-340. I have tried several places but have had no luck so far. Does anyone out there have any idea where I might find one? Also, has anyone ever had this problem before? The Car seems to run fine and there's no change in the way it runs when the light comes on either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: EGR Solenoid

did they tell you the code was for the EGR?
and did u check the dealer for the EGR? if thats what it is.
have you checked the vacuum lines and the electrical connector connected to the EGR?

TPI, or LT1?

TPI's have problems with vacuum leaks in the intake. After 40 minutes, the VCM does a check cycle, and re-evaluates driving parameters. This includes an evap canister purge. If vacuum doesn't hold properly to purge, 32 code sets (EGR). This code doesn't tell you if the EGR solenoid is bad, or if you have a vacuum leak, or if the actual diaphragm on the EGR itself is bad, etc.

Check for vacuum leaks first. Hard to do, but one giveaway of vacuum leak is loping idle. Sittin' in the driveway, the idle goes up for a moment, back down, and up, etc. Kinda' like when the AC compressor is cyclin', and the VCM kicks up the rev's for the compressor.

How' the idle?

I don't know if LT1's do it also, but I'm bettin' the likelihood is great...

Thanks for the input Cbeck. The idle sounds great. I hear no miss at all. If it weren't for the Light coming on, I'd never even think there was a problem. I just thought I'd replace both the EGR valve and the EGR Solenoid at the same time because it's a Bear to get to. My biggest problem however is locating an EGR Solenoid. I've searched everywhere online and nobody seems to have one. I'm not that mechanicaly inclined and I'm thinking I'll more than likely take it to a Garage and they charge $200 just to take off the top to get to the EGR, so I was hoping to have them do both at the same time to save some bucks. Anyone have an idea who might have an EGR Solenoid? Thanks again Cbeck

Re: EGR Solenoid

hey blantz, i also have a 91 vette that needed an egr solenoid. i bought one for a 87 el camino and its the same solenoid but a different mounting bracket. 60% of chevy solenoids are the same but again, dif brackets. use the bracket off the old one and youll be in bidness.
