Broken Thermostat

My 98 Explorer with 4.0L V6 had very funny idling problem. Normally the temp garge alway stay on litter bit lower than middel. Last week it went up to half or litter bit more. The idling RPM will go up from 800 to 1400. I took the car to dealer. Finally they just replaced the thermostat. I have no idea why the thermostat will affect the idling speed. Could someone can tell my why.

Many Thanks

Alex

Re: Broken Thermostat

the vehicle is programmed with strattegies to warm the engine as fast as possible and to prevent overheating as long as possible - other factors play in but temp will really set off idle speed

Re: Broken Thermostat

rivguy is correct! The PCM takes reading from quite a few sensors. One of them is the coolant temp. If the coolant does not reach proper operating temp, then the PCM still thinks the engine is cold causing multiple driveability issues.
