1996 Pontiac Sunfire Gt 2.4 Crankshaft Position Sensor

Help?? Anyone have a experience replacing the cranshaft position sensor on a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire GT with a 2.4? The replacement sensor (wells-su1072) that I purchased has the o ring on it with the bracket for the bolt to hold it in place and the electric plug comes straight out the top. I have searched for a sensor that would be close the crankshaft, but have not been able to locate one that looks like this one anywhere on the motor. It must be either hidden somewhere or the physical appearence is different on the new one?? There is a sensor just above the oil filter but the electric plug comes out sideways, and there are quite a few that come out sideways but none I can find with a plug coming out the top. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

That sensor that is just about the oil pan? is it going into the block??? If it is, that is most likely the crank position sensor.

I'm kinda hoping that isn't the one. I believe removing the starter will have to be done in order to replace it and the plug coming out of the side doesn't match up to the new one going in and the wire will probably rub on the starter. I was going to attempt to take it out tomorrow if I don't get a firm answer. I appreciate your response. Thanks

Try AutoZone.com - They now have a service manual on-line that takes you thru step-by-step on the replacement of most parts and vehicles. It may cover this issue, but I'm not sure. I was just on it last night for a friend's Sunfire, and think it had info about the crank sensor (one of her 7 codes!) Good Luck!
