Is my tranny bad???
Hi,
I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. The transmission works good in reverse and 1st gear, but thats it, theres no slipping or anything, the fluid isn't burnt. Any idea what the problem could be?? Thanks much. Ryan |

Re: Is my tranny bad???
Let's hope that it is nothing more than the TRS, Transmission Range Sensor.
Another name for the same part is Neutral Safety Switch. A test, which I have not done personally, that has been mentioned on here several times.....is to find the plug in connector on the TRS. The TRS is on TOP of the transmission....under the air filter/ hose to the throttle body.....in one of my pictures "under the air filter". You verify that you can get to it to unplug it......must be plugged in in order to start the vehicle (the neutral safety function). Then, with the engine at idle.....you unplug the TRS. Then, take it for a drive around the block.....the O/D light on the gear select lever will likely be on / flashing. If the transmission is shifting up into the upper gears (no need to worry about overdrive if you don't get up fast enough going around the block), then the problem is most likely the TRS. You can buy the part at many local auto part stores, and the dealer. I usually see it called "Neutral Safety Switch" at the auto part stores. Others, who have actually done this process, can correct me if I have mis-stated, or left something out.

My 98 Windstar has 103,000 miles and has a similar issue. While driving, the trans would shift in and out of OD. Then it would only shift as far as second. Then it only had first and reverse. This all happened within 10 miles. No warning, no slippage, and no burnt or discolored fluid. There is no check engine or OD lights on; flashing or steady. Van is well maintained. I purchased with 99,000 miles. Have not changed fluid and filter, but trans fluid has good color and no objectionable odor. Any clues?

Re: Is my tranny bad???
The Winnie tranny has two servos on the rear that are fairly easy to get to ... one lower and much easier than the other. Once accessed, each is fairly easy to rebuild with new seals etc. Not much money involved for parts.
The lower servo ("low-to higher gears") will definitely cause your symptoms ... but other things may also ... I'm not an expert, but I did have to repair this servo on my '99 tranny. Helps to have Ford dealer nearby. |
