Unhappy engine about to self destruct?

Yesterday the engine started to have some knocking sounds that would kind of come and go a little. Today it was really bad, like metal was hitting eachother or something. No cell, smoke or overheating. Stopped by a chevron mechanic place and they said the noise is coming from the oil pan area. The higher the rpms the worse it sounds.

Im guessing it spun a bearing or something broke and the crankshaft is smacking it around in the oil pan, or something?

Re: engine about to self destruct?

Read up on the timing belt tensioner. When it goes bad it can sound like major engine damage. It would come more from the front of the engine, though. What year?

Its never been low enough to set off the oil lite or make the engine tic. a quart or so before. Would have to run an engine with almost any oil in it for a decent amount of time for you are thinking though.
