Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
Im assuming you mean an LT1?
You'll probably need an adapter plate.

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
well, assuming the bolt patterns don't match, you'll need an adapter plate. there's no other way. if the bolt pattern don't match, you need something in between to connect them.
what engine is it? (i know, it's a 5.7/350, but is it an LT1? LT5? other?) what tranny is it? (model number) why specifically an Allison transmission? would you settle for another GM one?

so i have to use an automatic gear box. my sponsors are GM and we r building the car so it will look like a silverado. so from the opptions we have, we r going 4 an vortec 5.7 - it goes on the corvette has about 400hp, i need a heavy duty gearbox that can withhold the dakar race and thats why we chose the Allison. now the problem is i need an after marketing solution so that the computer of the gear and engine will be able to communicate. have an idea? |

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
well, there's no doubt you can make the two work in harmony. it's just a decent amount of work involved. i believe the Silverado 2500HDs came with an Allison 5-speed auto mated to the Duramax.
definitely want a gas engine over a diesel? an adapter plate can be custom made to bolt the two up, i just don't know about the splines and input shaft for the gearbox, that may be an issue. the electrics shouldn't be a problem, you just need someone who knows their stuff when it comes to wiring looms, because i think you're going to need a custom one. if you have the fund, you can build a chevy auto gearbox to mate to the engine and it'll hold up find. built road-going gearboxes are often built for drag racing and are put through a lot. The guys in the Chevy F-Body (Camaro/FireBird) forums can probably help better than i can, they know their Chevy stuff inside-out: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...lay.php?f=2129

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
am a little lost in all these sites
do u know someone i can email to get a solution, we are using a petrol car becuase of the regulations a disel car would have to have a very big minimum weight i know the engine and the gearbox each have a computer for themselves, the problem ia to connect between them both |

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
i've copied this thread to the Camaro forum, so those guys can see it too.
i'm sure they can help better than i can, i know more about Japanese/European engines. i think using a heavy-built GM transmission would be better than an Allison unit. you can build them up to handle mroe power and to withstand harsh conditions (just make sure you have a couple of coolers for it) and it'll weigh less.

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
I don't know the model number off-hand, but will look.
basically a road-going transmission with new internal parts that are stronger and more robust so they can withstand the race. i think that's easier than using an Allison, because they're small and lighter.

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
A GM 4L60E transmission should bolt right up to the engine (Which i assume is an LS6)
(someone correct me if i'm wrong) The 4L60E came in the '03-'04 corvette with the LS1 engine.

using something like a 4L60E transmission, with uprated internal parts would do the same job, take the same power and last just as long. but it would be phyiscally smaller and lights. of course, it's you're truck and your decision, i just think it's overkill and a lot of weight you don't neccessairly need. since you can take a smaller lighter gearbox and make it handle the same.

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
by the way - nice 2 meet
my name is dror and i live in tel aviv, israel ![]() i know the GM 4L60E transmission is on the Hummer H2 but the mecanicks here think the allison is much better and stronger we thought of putting the 4LS80E but we know of a lot of electrical problems and it fits perfectly but the main issue in the dakar is realibilty |

Re: communication VORTEC & Allison
That will get tricky. If you are using the corvette's induction system and ECM it won't be economically feasible. You'd probably need some kind of computer between them that can read what the Vette's ECM is saying, interpret it and then out put it to the transmission's ECM so it can understand what the engine is doing. The old Corvette ECM's were 8 bit and "spoke" in assembly language in one direction only. The newer ECM's are 16 bit (don't know what language they use) and are bi-directional in their communication.
It could probably be done but after solving the physical mating problems, you'd need a computer programmer that knows vehicle ECM's and possibly someone that builds custom ECM's. You'd be talking big money there. You could look into one of these http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm They have 700R4 transmissions, 4L60E's and 4L80E's. The 4L80E is what came in a lot of trucks and is basically a 4 speed electronic version of GM's old TH400 transmission, the heaviest duty trans they made back in the day. The above transmissions are all built for racing/ extreme duty use and basically have no stock factory parts in them any more. |
