trans hunting 3-4

hey guys, just bought an 02 silverado 5.3 z71. great truck , love it , but noticed a few times that it hunts for 4 gear, meaning itll be in third and shift form 3rd to forth back to 3rd and 4th again. does it about 3 or 4 times then just sits in fourth. guy at work had the same prob , but got his all re done. would a shift kit help this perhaps? is the band on its way out? or should i just go thru it and rebuild the thing with all the upgraded parts? (welded drum, upgraded 1st gear clutch pack, oversized 3-4 band and shiftkit)

thanks

Re: trans hunting 3-4

Are you sure this is not an issue of falling out of TCC Lockup? When the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) locks up, it almost feel like a shift and the RPMs will drop a few hundred RPMS.

There are Valve Body wear issues that can cause TCC to move in and out of lockup.

This is not a 2-4 band issue since the band is applied only in 2nd and 4th.

It might be a good idea to get it scanned while driving to see what the tranny is really doing.

Re: trans hunting 3-4

pretty positive its not a tcc issue, i can hear the rpm change and know it well enough to distenguish 3rd and 4th gear. however i will heed your advice and investiagte the tcc possibility. reason i ask about 3-4 tho is cuz one of the guys at my work said he had an issue like that

thanks

When the problem is happening, note the speed and rpms, then drop it into 3rd. That should help you figure out if it is really in 3rd or droping out of TCC lockup.

By the way, where is scv (looked at your profile)?

Re: trans hunting 3-4

acctually, paying more attention to it, i think it actually is the TCC, i guess i thought it wasent cuz i remembered hearing the tcc instantly unlocks when ever the bgrake lights go on , however mine appears not it , it actually seems to engage at speeds as low as 35 mph, it hasent done it again since , but again i wonder, will a shift kit help this issue? and what is the performance gain te the vette sevo mod? (sorry guys, new to auto's, been a manual man for a long time).

anyways yukon , im in saugus, where you at?

The Vette servo mod holds the 2-4 band tighter so the transmission will handle more power without burning out the 2-4 band and its drum.

Are you getting any check engine light?

I am in San Jose. I thought that maybe scv was Santa Clara Valley which San Jose is part of.

A transgo kit plus the vette servo is a nice setup and can help eliminate tcc lockup issues.

I have this setup in a muscle car and really like it. I about to do this on my 90 GMC K1500 (700r4) but this is more to do with valve body wear.
