1996 4.6L preparing block surface for new head gasket.

Posted this over on the Mercury forum but this forum gets more activity.

What is a good way to clean the block gasket surface for new head gaskets with the engiine in the car? Heads were warped due to overheating when plastic intake manifold ruptured.

Also --- any thoughts on head gasket suppliers. Should I stick with Ford or are other sources just as good? Other sources are certainly cheaper.
