More Malibu passlock crap

My gf has an 2002 Malibu with an aftermarket alarm/remote start installed by the dealer before purchase. She's had the car for 4 years I think(not sure of mileage).

She started having problems with the car cranking for too long before it would turn over. I check the plugs and they were old as s**t. I changed them and the car started better. A few months later the car would periodically crank but not start. If u try a few time without waiting it would start. Over the past month it got worse and sometimes while ur driving the anti theft light would come on then go off. Since she had other problems at the same time(lower intake gasket leak, needed heater resistor, window switch and coolant flush) we wanted to see what was still under warranty before I did any work.

The dealer said the ignition switch was bad and the passlock was screwed up and of course not covered by the warranty. They only covered the intake and the resistor. They also said somebody did a piss poor job on the alarm job. So we get the car back in the same crank no start condition. I replaced the ignition switch and the lock cylinder. The car started then shut off. Then I found out about leaving the key forward for 10-30 mins( i did it for 30 while cutting the grass). Now the car starts with no problem. After this im about to put the dash back together and the car remote starts by itself then the trunk popped and im like wtf? The keys were on my workbench alone. No magnets or other rf signals I know of. The car shut off as soon as it started and now the anti theft light is back on but this time its steady on, before it was blinking. I tried everything and couldnt get the car to start again.

So now I removed the alarm/remote start system. Still crank but no start with steady on anti theft light. I let the car sit every way I could think of in cluding with the battery unplugged and same s**t.

This is what I dont get...I decided to plug the passlock bypass module back in. The theft light was still on with the key turned to run but went out at the start position and the car started right up...WTF? So I unplugged the module with the car running and the light came back on but the car restarted. I unplugged the module with the car off. I tried every possible plug and unplug scenario key forward or back and everytime the car would start. Whenever I unplug the module(555T by the way) the anti theft light come on.

In the end I left the module plugged up in the car but for easy access so she can get to it if necessary.

I hate this passlock garbage, its a waste of money and alcohol if it has to be fixed.

The dealer wanted around $400 labor to replace ignition switch, lock cylinder and remove alarm.

AND HOW COME THEY PUT IN THE ALARM BUT WONT COVER THE JOB

I think the alarm screwed up the passlock or they just use s**tty parts.

WTF?

That is you answer. Tape the panel so you can't see the light.

Re: More Malibu passlock crap

Here, read this....http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=698861

Dealers will always say an install of anything aftermarket is a crappy install. Maybe yours is but maybe it isn't. Also, many dealers seem to "forget" that they install stuff outside the service area.

When you unlplugged the bypass for the PK2 system your car went into fail bypass mode. Just read the above link to find out what this system does, how it works and also how to disable it for about $5 plus a few hours of time.

Re: More Malibu passlock crap

but what I dont get is I still have an issue and I put a new lock and switch. All these forums show u how to bypass a faulty system. Mine is new

Its been almost a week so far and the car keeps starting but I have the 555T bypass module still hooked up and I shouldnt have to for the the anti theft light to go out.

I dont get it...

Re: More Malibu passlock crap

I'm not too sure what you mean? Did you replace the whole assembly because the PK2 decoder is many times seperate from the ignition lock. Also, when you properly replace the decoder or whole assembly you still have to learn it to the car because it'll have a new code versus what the car already has.

The 555t bypass only sends out the bypassed coded when the blue wire(I think it's blue, it's been a long time since I've sold DEI stuff) sees a ground pulse during remote starting. Now, you could take that pulse wire and hook it up to the keysense wire of the car as long as you are sure you got the right code. The keysense wire goes to ground when you insert the key into the ignition. If you were just to keep the pulse wire grounded it'd work but may run down the battery too quick because it'd be on all the time.

Re: More Malibu passlock crap

When I first finished replacing the lock cylinder and ignition switch I learned the code and everything was fine. For no apparent reason the car remote started and thats when the anti theft light came back on and the car wouldnt start...until I put the bypass module back in. Then the light went out and the car started right up.

Its been a couple of weeks now and havnt had any problems but the module is still hooked up.

I think the remote start is what screw up the passlock in the first place

Re: More Malibu passlock crap

Ok, that's the info I needed to hear. That bypass is the real old setup from DEI. It has a series of dip switches on the one side. You have to manually set those switches in order to get it to match the car's code. So, when you changed the ignition switch and learned the new code to the car, the code inside that bypass was still the old code. You need to change that code to match the new code. I don't have access to those manuals for the old systems so I can't tell you what they are anymore.
