ignition switch

97 blaxer 4+4 (floor shifter) can you bypass the safety switch when in park to let the key come out sometimes the solonoid gets stuck and have to manually use a piece of wire under ignition switch to unlock just wondering if you can bypass this feature with no problems thanks

I think you answered your own question with your second post. It has to be fixed, or you'll get problems such as these.

Re: ignition switch

There is. you need a scanner to check for these codes, and to diagnose anything else fopr that matter. But what you describe, and given the year(the '97's were notorious for bad ignition switches), it sounds like your problem.

Re: ignition switch

will a bad ignition switch cause the problems i am getting... every time the ses light comes on then it feels like tranny is stuck in drive have to manually down shift but it will only down shift to 2nd. after driving this way for a while it will start to drive like nothing happened then a little while later same thing will happen and when the problem persists that when the key will not come out.. is there any way to check ign switch before replacing?? thanks for your help and ideas.

Re: ignition switch

these things that you mention are all problems that start to occur when you have a bad ignition switch. the ignition switch powers a variety of systems so to speak, and this includes the transmission components. When the ignition switch starts going, some components do not get the necessary voltage, the computer thinks something is wrong, and all kinds of codes start to pop up. You mention that when the key doesn't come out that you start getting transmission problems and other times its ok, thats another indication of ignition swtich issues. Also you mention you have a '97. If you do a search on here for ignition switch issues, you'll find the '97 model year was a bad year for ignition switches.

There is really no way to check the switch that I know of, other than probing the wires, but with all the other info you have given, this sounds like a classic ignition switch problem. Only solution? Replace it.

I would say its a dealer part. The dealership will key it for you, give them the VIN# and they will set it up for you. There is a how to in the how to section to give you an idea.
