Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

I want to buy a car that get's better mileage than our GMC Envoy. My wife drives it to work but mileage is around 17mpg. Not complaining cause I know this is what the Envoy is suppose to get but I figure if we could get 30mpg her daily commute back and forth to work we could save quite a bit of money.
I have looked at the Hyundai Accent,Kia Rio,Kia Spectra,Sentra, etc. and now i'm looking at the Cavalier.
I want to get an 04 or 05. 99% of her driving is interstate driving so what kind of mileage could we expect to get? The transmission will probably be the automatic.
I don't care if it's the sedan or coupe(the coupe is very sharp looking)so what kind of mileage should the Cavalier get? I also like the fact there is a wide selection of aftermarket part's for the Cavalier. Thanks for your help!

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

You have never figured your mileage by dividing the number of miles driven by the amount of gas you use? How many gallon will the tank hold? If your putting in 10 gallons and you get 300 miles to a tank that works out to 30mpg which is pretty good. Had a Neon once and the city mpg was around 24-26 mpg but all interstae driving you would get real close to 38 mpg. I'm hoping the Cavalier would get close to that but it would be nice to what it really get's. Have been reading about the Cavalier engine and most people like it.

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

I honestly don't know how many gallons it holds, when I get gas I just fill it till the pump stops. I wanna say it can hold around 11-12 gallons tho. I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen it on the gas pump and 11 is sticking out my head.

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

what is gas mileage?

seriously though you'll get better economy out of one of the korean cars you mentioned or the sentra.

also cavalier has 14 gallon tank

so lances 300 miles = about 21 mpg whether that's highway city or both i dunno

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

Well my 97 Z24 before the engine blew, was getting 400 KILOMETERS a tank, rememebr I am in Canada. My tank is 52 Litres, and that's about $60 a tank CAD. Gas is 109.9 CAD here. So 400KM's a tank is good, can someone do the math for me :-P

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

if u go all highway, a cavy can easily get 400 miles per 14 gallons. i average about 29-31, but thats because its mostly highway or short little in town hops. now its nothing compared to a camry. my moms made it 550 miles on 16 gallons....a cavy is a good car, but if its just mileage ur worried about. i would go with some of the cars you mentioned above.

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

I got a 04, 5 speed I drive mostly freeway 70 miles round trip a day and I am getting between 32-35 miles to the gallon. my avarge for the last year as been 33.5, The one advanage I would see buying an 04 or 05 cavalier is you can get them for really cheap.

Re: Thinking about buying-Gas mileage?

I have an '04 Cavalier, and last few times I tested it I was getting around 360-400 miles to a tank, depending on how I was driving. Driving 55-65mph it was closest to 400 I believe. Mine cavalier was advertised at 34mpg highway.
