Re: synthetic or standard?
Going to syn should be done on a low mileage engine.
If it is worn out no special oil or additives are going to help. A lot of engines run over 200K with good service. What is you engine doing or not doing that makes you think it is tired? MT

Re: synthetic or standard?
Would you consider 90K miles too late to change? That's when I did and I have noticed improvements.

Re: synthetic or standard?
I really don't think synths make much sence for the average vehicle, I get 250k and over, before i sell my vehicles, consistently with Dino oil. You have to look at the cost/benefit ratio. I'll change over when UPS , FEDX and New York taxis start using it on their fleets.

Re: synthetic or standard?
I have always used synthetic oil for all my vehicles and always will. There is a noticable in performance in my opinion. If you don't have bad oil leaks, severe oil burning, switching to a synthetic will not harm your engine. The number one reason I use synthetic is for its ability to keep an engine clean internally. A clean engine lasts longer, runs better, and is less polluting.
I was a Mobil 1 user until recenly, until I learned Mobil1 may not be a true synthetic, as their prices still indicate they are. I have turned to Amsoil and have had good results with Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic oil. Yes regular dino oil works too, but in my opinion, if there is something better out there, I don't mind that extra cost in this case. |

I've been using Mobil1 for a long time. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do after hearing that they changed their formula. |

The sooner the better. But 90K is good to. The main thing is the regular service on oil changes. And remember synthetic or regular oil in a gas engine the oil will get dirty so always use a good filter. The filter is the key to keeping the oil clean. MT

Thats exactly what I said too when I heard this may be the case. The company is not admitting that there has been a formulation change. Mobil1 took castrol (or Exxon took BP) to court stating that BP was misrepresenting their product stating that their synthetic was not a true synthetc, but a Group III oil and a group III oil is not a synthetic, but highly a refined dino oil. Long story short, Mobil lost, and so the story goes it was about this time Mobil reformulated thier synthetic oil. The kicker is their prices havn't changed and they havn't showed any proof that there wasn't a change. So if I am going to pay synthetic oil prices, I myself want to make sure I can get real synthetic oil, so for me Amsoil is my next choice. Also about the oil filters, I agree without question using a good oil filter is highly important to the longevity of any engine. |

Re: synthetic or standard?
If you don't like changeing oil then use a synthetic if you drive a lot of miles. If you drive very few miles then it won't save you any time/money.

Re: synthetic or standard?
Every 3000 miles oil and filter and all mine are over 100k so switched to Valvoline 10w-40 high mileage oil which is now called a syn blend (wasn't last year so...). Even after the intakes went all run smoothly. The one with 170k has a slight rear main leak that the high mileage oil helped with. I know many do not like Fram but after all the articles read the TG mid model (TG3980) performed well and sold most places but of course the WIX and NAPA Gold are highest rated.
Bottom line check it regularly, change it regularly, and use good oil and filters. |

Re: synthetic or standard?
I've used mobil1 and napa gold oil filters, changed at 7000 - 8000 mile intervals. My Blazer currently has 212000 miles and still runs like new, smooth and quiet. I had a rear main leak right after switching at 100000 miles, but it cleared up quickly and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

Re: synthetic or standard?
My intervals have been 1 change per year on all vehicles whether they are trucks, cars, tractors, ect. I'm now at a filter and oil change every other year and about 25000-30000 miles. Lower usage vehicle at about once per year and 12000-15000 miles.
