Driveshaft Question

Is it possible to pop the driveshaft out of the transmission and move it clear for transmission removal without removing the wheel hub. According to my FSM that is possible but I've always removed the ball stud bolt and the strut bolts in order to remove the wheel hub in order to pull out the driveshaft.

Re: Driveshaft Question

Are you talking about a Geo Metro? I've got a Metro 5-speed manual and it has two drive axles, but no drive shaft. I've removed both axles to pull out the engine/transaxle as an assembly. I don't see how one could remove the axles without doing what you described.

Does your FSM give steps on how to do it?

Re: Driveshaft Question

If this is a 5 Speed manual and all your doing is pulling the tranny, Your going to have to remove at least the Drivers side Hub in order to gain enough access to remove the DS CV Axle....If there is a way without doing this, I haven't found it yet?

Re: Driveshaft Question

all i do when i am pulling axles is to pull the bolt where it joins to the ball joint. once you do that and turn the wheel all the way right for left axle and all the way left for right one you can then swing the bottom of the hub out far enough to get the axles out

Re: Driveshaft Question

This is the 3 speed MX17 automatic so I'm not sure how much it differs from pulling a 5 speed manual. I will try Crvett69's suggestion - at least will save me pulling the strut bolts out. I think I have tried it in the past and it never seems to work for me - not sure why.

Yes, I have to say that Crvett69's method does work. Thanks.
