Graphics card problems...

I'm really hoping somebody in here will have an idea of what I should do...

My current Dell had integrated graphics and it just straight up sucked for video editing and games. The only reason I originally went without a graphics card at the time was due to money issues and the fact that I just needed something that would work...

Anyways... I just upgraded my ram and graphics card... I put a Geforce 6200 PCI card in it and finally got everything squared away and working. Well there is only one problem now... Video... Anytime I try to play any video or any video editing program or games, the whole computer freaks out and runs at 100% processor power and it lags so terrible that it almost freezes... I've reinstalled my drivers and such and it still doesn't work. The system is more than powerful enough to handle it, so don't doubt that. P4 with 3.2ghz, 2gig ddr2ram, etc...

I'm not sure what else to try and its killing me here.

Please help me, all knowing computer gurus.

Yes, I completely disabled it in my hardware settings and the new card is enabled in the BIOS.

Re: Graphics card problems...

I know you said that you have reinstalled the drivers, but do you have the latest version?

Also, if you have another open PCI slot, I would swap the card in the other slot. I had this problem with a Fusion 5 HDTV tuner card and swapping slots fixed the problem. The device manager didn't show a conflict, but there was definately something going on because everything was fine after swapping slots.

If that doesn't work, let me know and we can check some other stuff.

EDIT -> Almost forgot, what model Dell do you have? Some older motherboards had a jumper that needed to be enabled for the onboard GPU to be ignored, along with the BIOS settings.

Ahhh Well its a Dimension E310 and yes I have the latest drivers for it... I just can't figure out why video makes it crash... Everything else works just fine and faster than ever. Sadly, I only have one freakin PCI slot in this thing...

It's not even a year old yet. I got it last September and never had any problems until I started gettin into HD video and it couldn't handle it at all...

If I can't get this within a week I might just sell the whole thing and build a new one from the ground up... Maybe...

Re: Graphics card problems...

According to Dell's website, there are 2 PCI slots and 1 PCI-x slot. Is it possible for you to remove the other card and test it out?

Also, apparently there isn't a jumper for turning off the onboard GPU. I noticed you said that the problem is with HD video. Do you encounter this problem with any video, or just HD?

that would be me

as others have said, it sounds like your On board video card is conflicting with your new one....don't disable it, uninstall it completely. Disabling it doesn't always disable everything!

Well Dell's website is wrong then. I have no PCI-x slots and I only have one open PCI slot...

Before I put the new video card in it was only HD video that would make the computer crash... Now any video makes it crash.

Only thing about that is if I do uninstall it and then if I have to go back to it then I'm screwed... I shoulda been fine just disabling it as I always have in the past with other computers...

This Dell hates me right now.

Re: Graphics card problems...

What a junky MB if it only has ONE PCI slot and no AGP or PCI-X. Dell gave you the shaft on that one man, especially if it's only a year old. PCI video cards are almost as worthless as onboard...

Try unloading all video drivers you can, and reinstall the newest one for the card. Also, uninstalling the onboard might not do much since Windows will probably just reinstall it upon reboot anyway. It is possible the card just took a shit on you. Can you try a different PCI card from a friend or something? How old is the card? You may still have a warranty on it depending on the manufacturer.

I tried an older card I had from a few years ago but it didn't work worth a shit since it was only 64mb's...

And the new card I just bought at Best Buy brand new 2 days ago...

Re: Graphics card problems...

For Future reference... PCI FTL

AGP 8X FTW

PCI_E= ok...:| (PCI_e isn't better than AGP, it's just newer/smaller... so it's blah)...

I run a Radeon 9600SE(IIRC) 256(?) AGP 8X video card, and have yet to have had a problem (3+yr now)
