Question check engine light and engine missin

I bought a '97 GAGT 3.1 with 64,000 for pretty cheap. 3 days after I bought it was gonna check/change the oil and noticed my intakes where leaking so i didnt change the oil right away. Was gonna let the dealer take care of it since it was under dealer warranty. Before I got it up there it started miss-firing and the check engine light was on. Took it back to the dealer, they didnt check the light but said they would change the intakes for me since they were obivously leaking. Replaced all gaskets from intakes up changed the plugs, and the oil. Well it ran good for about a month and last week my check engine light came back on again we figured that the wires need to be replaced since the plaugs were already replaced. Had auto-junk check it with their obd2 checker and it came up saying miss fire #2. So anyhow we changed the wires. Now a week later my check engine light came back on. Missin like crazy. Found out a buddy has a obd2 reader that hooks up to his lap-top. So we checkd it out and its reading miss fire #1. we think that this is the original problem that we had before the intake gaskets were changed but not 100% certain. We checked to make sure all the wire were tight on the plugs and on the coil pack. I wasn't sure if someone has had the same problem and found the solution that they could relay on to me cause I am stumped. And now I am pass the lil warranty that the dealer gave me. We thought it could be a head gasket starting to go but its not using any antifreeze.

Re: check engine light and engine missin

I doubt the head gasket is the issue in your case. This sounds like it could be due to a bad plug or wire. Sometimes even new wires will go bad. Also the coil for that particular plug could have an issue. You will need to eliminate each one in turn before you will get to the problem. It could also be bad or clogged fuel injectors that are causing the misfires. Pull the plugs and see what they look like. If they are in good shape then try another set of wires. If that doesn't work then try a new coil or swap it with another one to see if the misfire location changes. If it does then the coil is bad. Finally the injector would be the last place to look. Check all connections on the injectors to make sure the injector is firing correctly and if not you may have to put a new one on the car. I also suggest you change the fuel filter since it can cause issues if it hasn't been changed in a while.

Good Luck!
