73 Super Beetle Fuel Pump

I have installed a new mechanical fuel pump on my 73 Super and still can't get it to run. I am thinking I may have the lines mixed up. My model has an alternator. Can someone help me figure out what line from the pump goes to the carbeurator and which one comes from the tank?

Re: 73 Super Beetle Fuel Pump

The lower tube is inlet from the tank. Upper one to the carb.

More than likely, you have the wrong size push-rod. Some styles of pumps require a longer than stock rod.

To test the pump, hook up the lines as above, except don't hook the hose up to the carb. Disconnect the main coil wire. Have a friend turn over the engine while you have the end of the hose going into a coffee can. (Observe safety precautions) If you don't get fuel, you have the wrong push rod.

If you replaced the fuel pump due to no fuel, and you still don't have fuel with a new pump, the fuel line or tank outlet is clogged. To test for this, jack up the front end, and remove the fuel line from the pump. You should get fuel from the line, due to gravity.
