Shocks on 2003 Ranger

Front tires are cupping - thought I needed a front end alignment. Now finding that, at 40,000 miles, the problem is with the shocks....so, questions....

1. Can I change them myself, or do I need to use a mechanic? (I know that one's subjective....)
2. Do I need to replace front and back shocks at the same time? I've heard that if I replace only the fronts, it could lead to dangerous braking problems.
3. What are the best shocks to use? I don't have a lift or lowering system - just need shocks to make the ride smooth/safe and keep the tires from chewing themselves up!

1. if you have air tools you should be ok. if not may want to consider a mechanic
2. you may need to get to the back ones soon but if you are doing the fronts you may want to put off the rears till next week/month/what ever. even with air tools it will kick your butt.
3. all depends on what you want to spend you can get shocks for as little as 16$ a piece or as much as 150$ a piece all in what you want to spend

Just got done replacing all four shocks yesterday on my '99 Ranger. I used the Monroe Sentratac which cost me about $70.00 a pair at Pep Boys. These shocks are warranteed for life. Nothing much to replacing them. The rear shocks were easier to replace. I advice to remove the front tires when replacing the front shocks for easy access in removing the nuts. If anything replace them in pairs.

Thanks, guys, for the advice. Purchased all 4 - total of $160. Found a friend who used to have a Ranger - had air tools - and an afternoon to spare. It was a great learning experience for me! I'll always change my own from now on! Oh....and I've started my list for Father's Day, Birthday, Christmas.... Starting with 2.5 ton jack, jack stands, air compressor, impact wrinch and rachet, sockets, extensions..... My wife won't have a problem shopping for me for the next 5 years!!!

a good way to slow down cupping is to regularly rotate your tires. it wont comletely prevent it but it helps.
