66 thunderbird low fuel light

I just bought a 66 thunderbird and typical me, I had to find out if the low fuel light worked. The former owner told me he replaced the fuel sender. When i fill up, the guage only goes to 3/4 tank. But, I wanted to see if the low fuel warning light worked, so i traveled around with a gas tank in my trunk. Well today the low fuel light went on. I went to the gas station and put 12 gallons in the tank. The light won't go off. HELP, does anyone know how to turn this light off?

should go off by itself, but if on fillup the gauge only read 3/4 tank sounds as if you have short in system.. to shut the light off ypu can diconnect at fuel light at gas tank without disconnectng gauge... but this does not sove problem.. have 66 t myself with same problem gas tank full reads 1/2 to 3/4 have now replaced all but tank itself. electrical problems worse then engine problems.
