How to set Piston 1 to TDC (Top Dead Center)

I was doing about 80 yesterday when my car died!!

Timing belt busted…………

How do I set the No. 1 piston to TDC (top dead center)?

How much would it cost to get my valves redone, if damaged?

What mods do you all think that I should do, since I will be taking it apart?

Thanks!!

Get a wire coat hanger, and bend it straight. Take off the plug wire and pull out the plug in the #1 cylinder. Put the coat hanger down the hole and turn the crank until the coat hanger is at it's highest position.

i usually have a friend cover the plug hole with his finger and feel when the piston is pushing aire around his finger... that way you know its on the compresion stroke and not the exhaust stroke.. also.. i would put the cams to TDC first.

Re: How to set Piston 1 to TDC (Top Dead Center)

1. Remove Valve Cover
2. Loosen all spark plugs (remove upper timing belt cover to see the camshaft marker)
3. There is a marker on the lower timing belt cover like a "\/" thing
4. There are markers within the crankshaft pulley (3 lines that are close together and 1 line that is far from the 3 lines)
5. Align the marker from the lower timing belt cover to the crankshaft pulley (1 line)
6. Make sure the "UP" sign marker on the camshaft pulley is on the upside (Piston 1 @ TDC position)
7. If the "UP" sign marker on the camshaft pulley is on the downside (Piston 4 @ TDC position)

*be sure to turn the crankshaft pulley "COUNTER-CLOCKWISE"!!!
