Rear Sag

I have tried looking on this board to address a slightly sagging rear end - looks like it is a leaf spring issue.

I'd like to keep the Cherokee with a stock look but prevent additional sag in the future. Is it best to replace more than the rear leaf springs?

Also, what is the best tire for me if I primarily use my XJ on road/highway with occasional light off-roading?

Thanks

Re: Rear Sag

First of all, Welcome to AF. You'll find there is a lot of good info here.

There are a couple of threads about rear leaf springs sagging, but they're hard to find.

Basically you've got a couple of options - you can replace them with a new spring pack out of one of several catalogs, or you can have them re-arced and add a leaf at a spring shop.

What year is it? If it's older you may want to go the cheaper route, rearc and add a leaf. If it's newer and you plan on having it for quite awhile longer, (and have the $$ to put into it) the new spring pack may be the way to go.

As far as tires, there are a lot of good ones out there. Check out www.tirerack.com for options. There's an Avon tire that's both inexpensive and has good reviews; you can also view numerous other brands.

Re: Rear Sag

Thanks. I have a 99 XJ Sport 4x4 with auto trans. I plan on keeping it for a while.

I've only ever changed oil, plugs etc. on cars. How difficult is it to install? Would it be worth taking it to a shop in my area?

Re: Rear Sag

Sorry if I was misleading earlier.

If you have a Grand Cherokee, it's coil springs all around, and I'd recommend a shop to put them in, unless you have access to a lift, spring compressor, and other stuff.

If you have a Cherokee, and leaf springs, then there are probably 6 bolts holding the spring on each side; 2 on each Ubolt that goes around the axle, and another 1 on each shackle. This job you could do at home.

In both cases, be careful when unbolting everything, since the springs are under tension.

If you've only done a couple of things, then I'd say take it to a competent shop to have the work done.

Re: Rear Sag

Here's a link, (scroll down a good bit) with pics and detailed instructions on how you could just add another leaf to th pack to regain from sag or gain even more height if you wanted.

Read over it to see if you might think you can DIY...
