Transmission help

I have a '99 S-10 2wd w/ 2.2 4 cyl (if it makes a difference) tranny is a 5-speed. I need to change the transmission fluid but I'm a little confused. Owners manual says use "friction modified syncromesh transmission fluid," then lists a GM part no. What the hell is that, is it the GM stuff I'm guessing? Some people have said to just use engine oil, some have said to use Dexron III auto fluid. I bought some Shell Rotella 85w-140 for the rear differential, that says it's ok in tranny's but I'd like a better opinion. And just to double check, there is no filter in a manual transmission, correct? anyone who knows what their doing, I'd greatly appreciate a response. I don't like having to listen to a bottle, or the pimply faced kid at the auto store who says everything is ok to use. Also the plug and filler are a hex or allen screw, anyone know the size? I'll have to buy that too. Thanks to all, I appreciate it.

Use what the good book calls for.
Anything else can mess it up.
Your GM dealer will have the good stuff.
On the plugs find a bolt with a head that will fit the plug.
A pipe wrench or a welded on nut on the bolt or a double nut on it will remove and install the plugs.

Good call on the drain plug. I agree with ya, the original stuff is always the best, and I might end up doing that. But I'd like to find an equivalent product but cheaper priced. The GM dealer will rape ya on stuff like that. How about 1qt Lucas transmission and 4qts gear oil? Or would that be too thick in the winter?

There is no substuite for the good stuff.
Anythings else will mess up the transmission.
GM friction modified syncromesh transmission fluid.
How much does your dealer want for the fluid?
Which is cheaper the good GM friction modified syncromesh transmission good GM fluid or a new transmission?
Ifr you want to save a few dollars.
Check on line or find a dealer that will give you a discount on it.

Where did you find the fill plug for your manual transmission and what fluid did you opt to use? I don't have an owner's manual. Mine is a 1999 Xtreme 4 cyl.

Well, unfortunately I haven't gotten around to changing it yet. But I think that when I do, despite being told to do differently, I'll go with the over the counter stuff, and prolly some Lucas. As for the plug its near the rear of the tranny.

Better off to pitch the Lucas in the trash can on that one.
Go to the GM dealer parts counter and get the good stuff for it.

yep the plug is near the rear of the tranny, and the fill plug is a 17mm hex shaped. Can usually pick up at your local auto parts store for a couple bucks. as for the tranny fluid in your MT I would stick with what is recomended for your tranny Synchro-Mesh Manual Transmission Fluid (GM P/N 12345349) with an additional 5% Friction modifier added (GM P/N 12377916).

pennzoil makes a gear oil that is synchro mesh equivalent. i got it at autozone, but it was a pretty long time ago, so i don't remember how much it was.
