I Am Thinking A Thormastic But I Really Don't Think That Is It. Please Help.........

Hello Morrows,
Others on this forum are more experienced then me, but let me take a shot....... The top hose is the return from the engine and it should be hot. So if the hose is hot, it means that the thermostat is allowing the hot coolant to return to the radiator.

You said the engine is not overheating? Maybe the coolant itself is breaking down and needs to be replaced? What size engine do you have? I have the four banger and my engine never seems to get real hot.

Best Regards,
Stan

Manly is right, the top hose carries the hot water from the engine and is then cool by the radiator then goes back into the engine.

Re: 99 Ranger Upper Rad. Hose Hot !!

That is usually caused by the interior of the hose breaking down causing the exterior heat to escape through the damaged walls. Could be a solution which is too acidic. You can also change the thermostat from 192 deg. to 180 deg. (this may require your ignition timing be reset) Make sure to flush it with a quality, environmentally safe antifreeze (50:50) and bleed off the excess.

a cooler thermostsat does not require your timing be reset, but it will give you horrile gas mileage, the thermostat will open at a cooler temp, which will cause the computer to send more gas to the engine in order to get it to normal operating temperature, since the computer will never read thet the enging has been warmed up, it will keep dumping more gas into the engine.

the upper radiator hose being hot is normal every vehicle is like that
your truck is fine.

and if the coolant breaks down its fine i used to run straight water in my motor, coolant just keeps the radiator from corroding, has a higher boiling point, and can get the motor warmed up quicker in the winter time *hence the name antifreeze

How hot is hot? Have you tried to check the temperature out with an infrared thermometer to find out exactly how hot the water is in degress instead of relying on the idiot temperature gauge?

Re: 99 Ranger Upper Rad. Hose Hot !!

what is happening is the coolant in your engine gets hot and opens the thermostat then your hot coolant is coming from the engine into the radiator (upper hose) then flowing down through the radiator were the water is cooling off, then the cool water goes through the lower hose and enters the engine. then the whole cycle repeats.

your upper hose is suposed to be hot.

Re: 99 Ranger Upper Rad. Hose Hot !!

Your stat is designed to start opening at about 195 degrees F. Water boil at 212 degrees F but since your cooling system is pressurized, the boiling point is a little higher. You seem to base your assumption on the coolant being too but you haven't taken the exact temperature. One thing for sure, if your cooling system becomes overheated you'll know it cause your radiator cap is going to pop open or, you're going to bust a hose.

i live east coast beachside florida, its normal, look into it more if you like and if you find anything wrong please tell me so i dont over look it, but i work on cas everyday, and to me its normal, if you think your hose is too hot, your thermostat might not be opening up at the accurate time making the coolant too hot.
