Would I be crazy to tow with a new beetle 2 litre engine?
I'd like some advice please. Am I crazy for thinking of putting a hitch on my 2002 new beetle, 2 litre engine, 5 speed, for the occasional short haul of approx. 1600 lbs.? We have a truck and 5th wheel. We can "pony" in Alberta, but we're planning on going to British Columbia on a camping trip. Can't do it there. I'm planning on about an hour's drive, so 40 to 50 miles, each way...?
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this! Thanks so much, Crystal in Calgary, Alberta! |

You wouldnt be crazy.. just dumb.
The 2.0L is not meant for towing and will put additional strain on the tranmission which is already a common bad part on 2.0L |

Re: Would I be crazy to tow with a new beetle 2 litre engine?
The official VW handbook for your vehicle says:
Permissible trailer weights: with brakes, gradient up to 8%.....1200KG with brakes, gradient up to 12%....1000KG without brakes, gradient up to 12%...600KG. So according to VW it OK for what you suggest. Others may disagree. Back in the 50's in Australia and no doubt in other countries, cars with engines as small as 1200cc (Austin A40) would tow vans weighing in excess of 1000KG (1600lb) with no real problems except they were slow and sometimes boiled. 50 years later I think we have progressed. Your choice. |

Re: Would I be crazy to tow with a new beetle 2 litre engine?
Recommended towing for most vehicles in North America is figured by the combination of trailer and cargo shouldn't be more than 80% of vehicle weight unless the trailer has brakes, if the trailer has brakes then the combined weight of the trailer and cargo shouldn't be more than 95% (I think) of vehicle weight. Included in the trailer and cargo weights is the weight of the passengers in the vehicle and the cargo in the vehicle as well. The big concern isn't necessairly pulling the trailer but stopping the trailer. If the trailer is heavier than the braking system can handle, stopping is certainly going to be interesting. My wife has a 98 beetle, I wouldn't tow with it due to the light weight of the car, plus the clearance issues a trailer hitch would cause on the rear of the car. Just my

Re: Would I be crazy to tow with a new beetle 2 litre engine?
Hmmm... 3700 lbs, 150bhp (on 2007 models).... Thats alot of weight to begin with, then add on a 1700 lb trailer + load, thats 150bhp moving 5400lbs from a dead stop uphill. Someone's gonna have to get out and push to get it started. Just my

150.... try 105hp on a 2.0L, and less if its an automatic.
I once saw a guy with a 00 beetle tdi 5spd manual with a snow plow on the front.. heh.. wish I had my camera that day

Also the weight is about 2860lbs - not 3700lbs!
