1997 Ford Explorer
Hello guys,
Decided to do a tune up and replaced plugs and plug wires. Put in Champion plugs and the thirty dollar variety of plug wires from Advance Auto Parts. Gapped them all to .050. Still have a little hesitation at idle. Checked to see that I didn't knock loose any vacuum lines or crack any, they look good. What next? Better spark plug wires? |

Re: 1997 Ford Explorer
"Hesitation at idle?" Is that hesitation off idle (starting to accelerate) or roughness at idle?
For either, I'd start by suggesting you add a bottle of fuel injector cleaner to the fuel tank and driving it for 100 miles or so and see if it's better. Also, you'd done part of a tune up with the plugs and wires, what about the fuel filter? If you're experiencing roughness, I'd suggest you look in to replacing a coil pack. You didn't mention which engine you have. Do you know if it has separate coil packs - the V8 has two coil packs, but I'm not sure about the V-6 and I don't have the service manual handy. -Rod |

Re: 1997 Ford Explorer
Ford is real finiky about the type of plugs and wires you use. If you use the cheaper varieties, you are just asking for trouble. I recommend using Motorcraft plugs and wires even though they are a lot more expensive. The OE plugs and wires are usually good for about 80K plus. Champion and cheap wires are sood for about 15 to 25K. Good luck.

Hey Guys,
The motor I have is the 4.0 liter V-6. And it is a roughness at idle and not during acceleration. It was fine before I started this little project. I had a couple of weeks prior run some Gumout fuel injector cleaner through it but also recently added some Marvel Mystery Oil to the crankcase. Did not put any of the Marvel in the fuel system. What next? Coil pack? |

Re: 1997 Ford Explorer
Since your roughness was not there before the plugs and plug wires, way2old is probably on to something. He's got A LOT more experience on these Fords than I do.
If you have access to a scan tool with the "component parameters" mode, you can check each cylinder individually for misfires, even if they are not severe enough to set the check engine light. I did this on my Mountaineer V-8, found cylinder #5 had misfires. Put new plugs and wires in (Autolite plugs, house brand mid-grade wires) and the misfire moved to cylinder #2. These two cylinders share a coil, so I replaced the coil and everything has been fine since. -Rod |

Re: 1997 Ford Explorer
Way2old was right. Took out the Champion RS12YC plug and put in Autolite XP 103s. Big difference! No roughness at idle any more. Thanks guys! I should no better than to try the cheap way out. Also the 35 dollar spark plug wires seem to be working fine with the more expensive plugs. Not bad though. $6.48 per plug.
