Got a Promotion!!

Hello Friends,

I received a Promotion this week. The best part about it was, I was not expecting one. Not for another year atleast! Now my dilemma is whether I should send an e-mail or a Thank you Letter to my Manager. Either way I feel I should acknowledge the promotion some how. Here is a sample of what I would like to say, any additional input would be greatly appreciated!!

__________________________

Dear Mr. Smith,

Allow me to express my sincere gratitude for the career advancement given me. I am very grateful and honored to accept this promotion.

I want to thank you for the expression of faith in my abilities that you have exhibited by this gesture, and will certainly do my very best not to disappoint you and our colleague's. I am looking forward to continuing my responsibilities and I assure you that I will definitely be an asset for ABC Corporation.

Thank you so much.

Respectfully yours,
XYZ

Re: Got a Promotion!!

Promotions are not awarded for the benefit of employees. They are usually awarded because the employer believes that he/she can extract a safer return for the wage bill by promoting internally than by hiring an outsider for a senior role. Better the devil you know, etc.
No doubt there are extra responsibilities that go with the new position. Any pay rise that you receive will reflect the company's higher expectation in return. I've worked with a large company for long enough to realise that the higher up the ladder you climb, the greasier the rungs get. When the going gets tough, the guys in the middle generally get shot before the top or the bottom.
Good luck with the promotion, you must have the qualities and atitude that those upstairs think neccesary to achieve their objectives. Save the letters of gratitude for when they drop you an unplanned cash bonus or some other random act of kindness. Nobody gets moved unless the boss sees potential to maximise his return on the wage dollar.

Re: Got a Promotion!!

DOH!!

Thanks o'wise and mighty Mr.T, I was hoping for a response from you first!! I'm basically still doing the same job, just a higher pay scale and now a senior position. I did get a hefty raise with the promotion... but for me its more of an adjustment for the crappy raises I've gotten the last 2 years.
Anyways I fully understand your argument and with all the hard work I've been putting down over the pass few years I do deserve to be compensated!! I'll take your advice and hold off on the gratitude letter. It's been awhile since I logged on here Happy to see your still around!! Thanks again!!

Re: Got a Promotion!!

The thank you response should match the presentation of the promotion. By that I mean that if you found out you were promoted via post-it note on your monitor then your boss probably isn't much into excessive audulation, but if there was a whole ceremony where rose petals were thrown and grapes were fed to you by virgin maidens then you should ham it up a bit in your response.

Last time I was promoted my boss got me a loosie from a call girl... I wasn't quite sure how to do that thank you

Re: Got a Promotion!!

Do NOT kiss his ass.

Ask for 5 minutes of his time to discuss new responsibilities and opportunities.

Re: Got a Promotion!!

I would say it depends on how your office is.

Every quarter our department has a "little" meeting to discuss the employees of the quarter, promotions and dealings with the company. It seemed these people did "earn" their promotion.

Problem with me is I'm a field engineer and my office is some times5,000 miles away from where I work. They have the meetings all the time I'm just never there. For instance, I've been in Korea for the pass 3 months and then I'm off to Japan (love my job) then back home.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm still new to the whole Corporation thing. Just happy to have a job I love to do!!
