fuel pump and sending unit

Has anyone had Fuel pump problems with their Intrigues? I don't have a problem w/ the pump yet but the gas guage doesn't work most of the time.
My '99' Intrigue w/ the 3.5 has 145,000 miles and I was wondering if I should change the pump and sending unit before the pump quits or are people getting alot more miles before they fail?
I don't want to replace the sending unit only to have the pump go a week later.

My fuel guage has not worked properly since about 65,000 miles. I now have 141,000 on my 2000 Intrigue and still have not fixed the sending unit nor had problems with my fuel pump. It is possible to replace just the sending unit even though most places will tell you it's all tied together. If you do a search on this forum for "fuel guage", you should find your answer.

I figured that I could just replace the sending unit only but once I had it apart I wondered if I should replace the pump if it was near the end of its life and not have to do the job twice. I did a search on fuel pump but came up empty. I'll try fuel guage.

I went about a year before seriously thinking about replacing the fuel sender relay. The cost was about $90, and less than 1 hour of my time. Being a mechanically minded person, it should have been less time, but I still had 1/2 a tank of gas, and kids to keep entertained. This was discussed quite a while ago, and someone went as far as to post a pic of what the 'whole thing' looked like.

Then only problem I haf was getting the 'canister' lined up correctly to put back in place, otherwise, I would rate it a 5 of 10 on a difficulty scale.

If your fuel filter - inline and on the fuel pump - look dirty, you might as well replace that. If not, dont worry about it. Its simple enough to do when / if that time comes.
