this is a weird one

OK,

I bought a 1997 528i 1 week ago.

Today I working on finding an oil leak and in the process found that the passenger side high beam wire was unplugged...so I did the natural thing and plugged it in.

the car was off the key was out and the light came on and stayed on untill I unplugged it (10 min later).

The only thing I can think is the car has an after market in the dash radar detector...may be the previous yahoo wired it himeself and fouled things up....maybe not!

any suggestions...I am not an electrical engineer and would be hard pressed to read a wiring diagram.

PS. I found the oil leak and oddly enough it appears to be coming from one of the exhaust manifold bolts...does that make any sense to anyone (yesterday I replaced the valve cover gasket...so I am sure it is not leaking from there)

Re: this is a weird one

That's probably what he did.

I know that's what I did for my '91 Volks to pass a safety. I had a side marker light that wasn't working with the car on. The guy said he wanted all the lights to work, so I wired the bulb (a tiny 0.5 amp bulb) straight to the battery.

After the safety was passed I pulled the wire off and stuffed it into the front fender. Good times.

If you can't get it to work you might have to wire that back to the main switch....good luck. Try to find where the wire goes and trace it. He might have spliced it into something.

Just don't go around pulling wires out though.

As for the oil leak...maybe they had to take the exhaust manifold off once and had to drill out a bolt...and they might have gone a bit too far.

Thanks!

I plan to look at the Light module in the next couple of weeks when I get a chance...and will try to trace the wiring he did...see where it takes me.

Peace
