Taurus wil not crank

95 SHO 3.2L auto, occasionally when trying to start all appropriate instrument lights work, starter relay clicks, starter does not crank. Other times car starts and works fine. Latest problem when car does start, it wil not shrift into drive. ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED!!

Re: Taurus wil not crank

Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you SHO probably has a bad starter. The starter is located on the front lower portion of the engine block, a bit behind the radiator. Not too bad to get to. Next time it doesn't want to start, try giving the starter a couple of decent blows with a blunt object and see if the starter will now crank the engine over. If so, chances are pretty good a new or rebuilt starter will solve that issue.

As for the shifting, does the shift lever on the console move, or it won't let you shift from park, even with your foot on the brake pedal? If the latter, then you probably have either an issue with the brake pedal swtich (deactivates the shift interlock) or a problem with the interlock system.

Wink Re: Taurus wil not crank

If there is oil around where the starter is mounted that would keep it from grounding properly, which would explain why it's intermittent. Simply removing the starter and cleaning where it mounts will fix this issue. If there is oil inside the starter then you can either disassemble it and clean it, or replace it, depends on your budget The contacts inside the motor are probably worn down too. These can be fixed but it's a hassle if you've never worked on an electrical motor before. In that case just replace it. Either way you'll want to diagnose the problem starting at the starter and working backwards toward the ignition switch. The starter is 12 years old so it might just be time to replace it

Re: Taurus wil not crank

SHORod, Regarding the transmission, all passenger compartment movement is fine. The problem does not appear to be in the linkage. When looking down at the shift cable end, under hood, cable moves transmission linkage.

Thanks to both of you for the info. I will look into it this weekend.
