1996 Dodge ram steering box

the steering box in my 1996 dodge ram is on its way out. very unstable and alot of clunking noises coming from the front. Is this a difficult job to do? what does it consist of? Is it possible to rebuild the one i have or would it be easier to by one that has already been rebuilt? Any Info would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Re: 1996 Dodge ram steering box

Box weighs 31lbs, better get some helper. Check your steering links ball joints. Get under and ask ur kid to wiggle the steering wheel back and forth. You'll see/hear where the problem is.
Also, check Steering box Pitman arm shaft for any axial play.Should have no wobble at all. Should have 0 play. If it does-replace the box ( 3 bolts, 2 fittings and steering shaft bolt. Buy a rebuilt unit from Carsteering.com or discountsteering.com for $190 (free shipping). Get yourself a good heavy duty Pitman arm puller, braker bar, flare wrenches and get to work.
