Re: Towing with a 2004 Montana
I do some occasional towing; I have inflatable rear shocks .
I play safe and the item most susceptible to suffer from overload is the transmission because it uses a set of gears in overdrive (sun, planet and epicyclic gears) so I keep the transmission on the D range so it stays in 3rd gear, which is direct drive, hence uses no gears and also saves torque on all clutches. (in OD, applied torque is 33% higher on all 1st,2nd and 3rd clutches). ENgine toll is also releived . IF if have a significant wind with me in the back on level ground, or down hill, I will let it go in OD . Once the transmission is saved, this is a very costly item, all the rest is no problem.

with my 02 olds the service man says to use the trans in drive and the computer will do the rest (watch the tack in pulling and wind the rpm is moving apx 800 rpm higher in the head wind or pulling). use the 3 2 1 gears for hold back on down hill

Re: Towing with a 2004 Montana
Yes 463 is right about the computer saving the day: if you overtorque the transmission and heat goes up, there is a temp sensor in the transmission that will eventually cause the computer to drop the TCC clutch as well as the 4th gear. I consider that an annoyance as it means the transmission has been driven past its design values; I prefer running in 3rd (D) as this allows to keep TCC engaged in 3rd, rather than letting computer hunting between 4TCC and 3noTCC. That is simply a preference.

Re: Towing with a 2004 Montana
Thanx for the replies. I thought there was a sensor for the tranny, but wasnt sure. My wife has put close to 100,000 miles on our Montana and we need to keep it another year so we wont lose our shirts when we go to trade it in. We have a 1500 lbs popup and have towed it to Gatlinburg TN a couple times which about a 5 hr drive.

I would definitely add a transmission cooler if you do not already have one. Heat kills a transmission and any help you can give the transmission it will thank you.
