Sluggish at 3000 rpm

My X-type just started to misfire or choke down once the tach reaches 3000 rpms. It is a 5 speed, and once shifted it will run clean untill 3000 again.

This happened suddenly yesterday morning and the check engine light has come on and stays on.
Does anyone have an idea what this could be from?

Try changing the fuel filter. It may be starving for fuel at high RPMs.
