91 Cav has trouble starting/running

My wifes 1991 cavalier has been having a hard time starting and, when it does get started, dies on occasion. During the times when it's hard to start it will start up and quickly die out, and you can smell gas inside the car. I'm getting ready to change the plugs and wires, but does anyone else have any suggestions?

Follow Up Edit:

I just changed the plugs and wires. It started rough, spit and sputtered a few times, but seems to be idleing ok. I'm going to drive it around and see what happens.
