center differential leak

i just noticed that i have a small leak of transmission fluid and it looks as if it is the center differential that is leaking. i am still learning about 4WD vehicles and I am wondering if this is something that can be fixed. Do these things usually leak due to a bad seal or something like that? its a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the Selec-Trac and it has about 144,000 miles on it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: center differential leak

Your center diff. is the transfer case. Check the owners manual as to type of fluid to use in it. I suggest you clean off the transfer case with a cleaner, we use "Brake Clean", make sure you are wearing safety glasses. Take it on a test drive then try to pin point where the leak is coming from, i.e. case housing, tail shaft seal, etc.

it was coming from the case housing. i took it apart and decided to replace the seal. it was pretty beat. i put in a new one and put everything back together and filled it with fluid and there was no leak. thanks for the help!
