1992 tracker engine

My graandson has a 92 GEO Tracker that is shot.
It has a 1.6 L engine w/ automatic trans.
I am looking for a good used engine.

My question: Will other 1.6 L engines from different years fit correctly w/o
any modification?

You can tell I am not a mechanic.

P.S.
If anyone has had problems:
This one had a loss of power. It took a long time getting up to speed.
Once there it ran like a rabbit.
Took it to a dealer.
Said it was thetiming belt. Fine fix it! $500.00 dollars down the tubes.
Needless to say - wasn't fixed. Took it back. They gave it a compression check. Failed!!!!
For some reason didn't didn't do that first.
If you have a similar problem checkcylinders first.

Mine failed a compression test after I bought it. I took it apart and found that the piston ring was shot. No other damage the ring itself was around $5 to replace however the gaskets set was nearly $100 if I remember right so the repair costed me less than $150 I would just take the engine apart if I were you and look to see what is wrong before purchasing a rebuilt one but thats me.

some get an engine from the wreckers and replace it twice. ( me , my buddy and many a man)
others get an engine from the cheap 25k mile (so called) import engines from japan.
other buy a full rebuild for $1700 plus install labor.
other have theirs rebuilt at huge cost. Vast !

then there are those , weekend knucle draggers, like me,
that do an Earl Schieb ring job. (sorry Earl !)
This is taught in school btw.

1.) rip it out.
2.) take it all apart and mark and tag everything.
3.) run a ridge reemer on the top of each cylinder. (rent)
4.) buy or rent a glaze breaker and run it thru each cyl. as the instructions say. "read Cross hatch pattern"
5.) now fit new rings on old pistions ( using what ever size was in the engine before , it is stamped on top of your now clean piston tops.

of course you used a piston ring groove cleaner on the pistions and not a wire brush , right ?

put it all back together , clean as a whistle.
all new gaskets,
new water pump and oil pump !!!
silent prayer, and off you go. Thanks Earl.

How ever you might make sure the cylinders are not too worn as they may never seat up to the new rings.
if they are worn too much, you need to bore it and get new pistion sets. ( another $300)

If in no hurry you can save more money on the later.
take block to machine shop, with shop manual page for piston fit rules. tell the to bore it to the next over size that CLEANS IT UP. then tell them to call you.
then buy the XXX oversize he tells you and get them discount on the web.
at this point you can put it together (the short block)
or have the machine shop do it.

time is money.
if you have not time, yah got to spend more money.

Tell the mech.shop , tank it, boil it, paint it, bore it and new freeze plugs.
then call me.

dont forget to "Pastigage(tm)" all the crank and rod journals.
react acordingly to the readings. new crank? bearings?

this all assumes it is NOT A HEAD problem
how do you know its the block? and not a craked valve
or stuck open valve?
did you put oil in the cycl to see if compression rise?
if it does , its rings, if not its valves (major contribute).
did you watch the action of the valves and timing?
they open , they close , TDC rules are correct?
bad timing on the belt cause 50% reduction of compresson on many an engine.
YMMV and FFT.

each persons needs are different.
some are saving money other time.
and others ,it's a leaning experience.
or ?
but what ever , have some fun.

good hint, get some mech. gloves and nitrel gloves.
pull the wrenches , try not to push.
