Question Starting Problems

I was handed down a 1991 Oldsmobile Ciera S from my uncle. The car needed a starter, so i replaced that it started right up after sitting for a few months. Got an oil change and tune up. It ran fine for about a month. Then i let it sit while I was on vacation for a few weeks and I got back it wouldn't start. It ended up needing something else (forget what it was) something simple though. I ran fine for awhile, about 2 months. I noticed that when I started it it seemed like the battery was dying or it was dead. One day I shut it off and tried again and it wouldn't start. The lights became dim. So I bought a new battery, the lights weren't dim anymore but the car would not start. Then I got some advice from a mechanic and he figured it was the neutral lock out switch. Changed that and still the same problem. The car CAN be started by unhooking the connector from the neutral lockout switch and touching the larger purple wire to the + battery terminal. But that became a pain in the ass. One day i forgot to plug the connector back in and the wire tangled around something and were ripped apart. (still able to start it) I need an opinon on what could be wrong with it. I even got a new ignition put in. I can turn the key all the way but the engine will not turn over. But it takes juice from the battery. But any ideas that could be wrong with it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to pay a mechanic $80 an hour around here to put in on the machine to find out what's wrong. I figured I would ask around first before I did that.

Sorry about the length...
