Red face rust repair and treatment?

I have a '84 toyota 4runner that has some rust holes on the floorboards. I would like to learn to fill in the holes and treat the rust myself but I have never done it before. Does anyone know how to do this and what products work best for the job? thank-you for your time

Re: rust repair and treatment?

Working on the floor is a bit rough, but most body work is. You have to take up all the mats, carpet etc out of the way and thoroughly clean the area you want to fix. Cearing all the rust you can with sandpaper, grinding wheel, wire brush. Whatever you have and feel comfortable with. You can treat the rust with a rust converter which is a solution that turns the rust back to an iron compound, I have used this type of product a quite a bit on many things and been happy with the results. Next you want to sand it with a 400 grit paper or so and prime the area with a rust coast primer. (somthing that will slow the rust down) allow ample drying time and then paint. That's if you don't want to remove all the rust. If you do, then you will have to tack weld some sheet metal over the holes you'll make, then use body filler to even them out. Then prime and paint. Always be sure to sand the area, clean with lacker thinner and dry before painting and priming.

Re: rust repair and treatment?

Thank you JamieR, I will look into which method will suit me best and start buying the supplies. You have been a big help, I have looked all over the net and couldn't get any straight answers. I Hope I can fix my baby up by next summer. Thank you Sincerely Toy4x4sis
