Can Someone Explain This

Hey Everyone. I own a 94 Cavalier with the 3.1 V6 in it. In the past month or so, my car has been doing something really wierd. When I fill it up with gas, and ONLY when I fill it up with gas, the car won't start after I'm done filling. Today, I went back out after paying, and it cranked once, and then everything died. EVERYTHING, no radio, no starter click, etc. So I diconnected the negative battery terminal, reconnected it, and then it started hesitantly, ran a little rough, but started. I Let it idle for a minute or so and everything evened out. Drove an hour on the interstate after this with no issues.

I am getting no engine codes.

Seems like something must be shorting out, but it only does this when I fill up with gas. This leads me to the fuel pump maybe? But I can drive it the rest of the time with no problems. Any Ideas?

Yea... I am having similiar problems as you I wouldn't really recommend driving it some more cuz it may lead to cutting off on the road. Like if you have like more then 3 electrical things running it may cut it off.. like my problem its not really safe to drive like that.

It truly sounds as if your having a short at the fuel pump. And its shorting out everything else. I would check the wiring around the connections at the fuel pump and go from there. But thats what it honestly seems like. I had that happen with my 91 so its possible its the problem with yours.

can't be a fuel pump issue if the car isn't even turning over. Weird that it's only whne you fill up. It could be something weird like that car is being gorunded out by the pump but I still can't understand how that would cause this. have you tired a different battery in the car?

I'll have to think about this one.
