AC Compressor

I tried the search option but it wasnt working so forgive me if this has already been covered.

I have a 94 C1500 4.3 Vortec 2wd, the truck has been sitting and only used on occasion. I turned the AC on and there was a loud clunk, and the compressor locked up. I turned the truck off for a little and started it up again, it was spinning fine again. Each time i try to turn it on the compressor starts to squeel in antisipation to locking up. i have the freon level sensor unplugged for now so it doesnt try to turn on. My question is, i am going to replace the compressor, when should i evac it, before and/or after installing the new one? Also what else should i replace or look out for?

Thanks, Tim

Re: AC Compressor

You will want to evacuate it before and after you replace it(by evacuate I mean use a machine to pull the system into a vacuum) You also may want to flush the entire system and replace the orifice tube. I wanna say it is behind the passenger side parking lamp on these trucks. I usually recommend replacing the accumulator also when you replace a compressor.

Re: AC Compressor

This diagram will show you where the orifice tube is on your truck http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cd/0102.asp (see 2nd design).

Like abaird already said, orifice tube and accumulator should really be replaced. If the orifice tube has any metal from the compressor, then the system also needs to be flushed.

Here is my recommendation:
1) Evacuate
2) Remove compressor, accumulator and orifice tube
3) Flush the condensor, evaporator and lines (if needed). There is no need to run flush thru brand new parts.
4) Install compressor, accumulator and orifice tube
5) Evacuate, make sure system holds a vacuum for 30 minutes
6) Fill with r134a with amount specified on accumulator sticker
7) Enjoy cool air inside cab of truck

Re: AC Compressor

Don't forget to put in the oil. I will also add some dye, makes it easier for the next guy to find any leaks.
