I recently purchased a 2002 1.8 turbo 5 speed. The service when purchased included fresh oil and filter, still at proper level and clean--sporadically it sets both a blinking blue cold engine and low oil pressure lights, complete with bells. It also sets a continuous airbag light. The vehicle exhibits some damage (concrete scraping of plastic underside of bumper)indicative of running the left front end up on a parking strip or curb. What may be the airbag sensor (two wires to a small bulb-looking device plugged into a socket) was just hanging loose near the foglight. Today I noticed a brn/blk wire not connected under the driver seat. Any feedback will be appreciated--this is a hobby car, not needed quickly, so I can try a few home remedies--I just received a scan tool from OBDTool.com that is supposed to read and reset codes, including airbags. I have not had the opportunity to hook it up yet.

Re: 2002 turbo with a mind of its own
The wires in the grille is the fog light.
THe wire under the seat I believe is for the seat heater. |

Re: 2002 turbo with a mind of its own
Thanks a million--I have some health issues that limit my ability to do everything I used to, but as soon as I get a chance, I will do a little mor troubleshooting on this (and compare to my other VWs) and I'll get back to you. I do appreciate your advice.

Re: 2002 turbo with a mind of its own
as for the sensor lights check the grounds but i would check all connection all the way to the inside it sound like you may also have a loose connector as for the wire your talking about in the front it is on the drivers side right
if so it is the air tem sensor for your over head temp this not a flod car or water car by chance is it |

Re: 2002 turbo with a mind of its own
Thanks, everyone--I thought this was pretty much a dead posting, but see it still sparks some interest.
I have some updates and have learned a bunch since April. The airbag problem was the controller module. Internal error. Airbag Systems reset it (separate posting) and no other problems. I did clean every grounding connection in and around the dash and ran an additional one to the airbag controller module while I was working that system. I have had no other incidents with the alarms. The bulb/wire thing was the outside air sensor--it's fine and the loose wire under the seat was the seat heater. I do not believe the car is a flood car, but has had a water problem. Once following an especially heavy rain, there was about an inch of water on only the passenger side. I've dried it all out and try to keep it that way. No idea how the water gathered, but still investigating. I had a drain rubber plug up on my Jetta a while back, but it appears the sunroof drain system is different on the New Beetle. |
