Engine Stops

97 aurora,

Engine on idle just stops running after it is warmed up. No signs of problem. No rough idle. Nothing, just stops. The only thing I can think of maybe the low coolant sensor has something to do with. I have been getting a "low coolant" in the obd display. I ordered a new resivior to replace the sensor. It will be in tommorrow morning. Has anyone had this issue before?

Re: Engine Stops

ok, just finished new resivior and the low coolant light is not coming on, and display says "monitored systems ok". But still, the engine still stops.

Re: Engine Stops

If your engine is stalling, change your plugs, change your fuel filter, PCV valve, and make sure you're putting premium gasoline in the 4.0 engine.

Re: Engine Stops

wrong. stalling is mostly to camshaft or/and crankshaft sensors failure

Re: Engine Stops

plugs are brand new gapped to .060, fuel pressure is running solid 46 psi, so fuel filter is not a problem. Haven't checked pcv or replaced. I was hopeing not to just throw parts at this thing. I was hopeing that someone had a similiar problem before. It is going in tuesday to have the codes read. Will see what they show.

Re: Engine Stops

sorry but 'gunning parts' is quiet usual 'technique' for rora's.

surefire way is to hook up scanner (proper tech2) and monitor sensor inputs.
my bet - camshaft/crankshaft sensor/s

edit: oh ! when it's warmed up so in 10minutish ? wows, that means that while system in a 'closed loop' mode (ignition generated by IgnitionControlModule[thingie under coils] and o2 sensor input is ignored) it's ok, but as soon as it warms up and tryes to go into 'open loop' mode (ignition controlled by PCM with aid of ICM and all sensor input is used to optimize running) it shuts.... well, scanner, the old scanner can help !

Re: Engine Stops

thanks lynzoid,
That is what I figured is going on. It does just fine until it is warmed up. I don't have a scanner, so I let the guys who have one do it. then I 'll most likely do the repair myself. I know it has to be sensor going bad or I thought maybe it was the ICM or a weak coil pack, but hard to tell with out the proper tools. I will post back to with out come.

Re: Engine Stops

not weak coil pack for sure.

Re: Engine Stops

Ok, update.

It is at the mechanics right now. One of the O2 sensors was bad. and the line that goes from to evap canistor was melted. Appearently, it runs all the way to the back of the car and crosses above the muffler system somewhere. He has to replace that line, and he is gonna put heat tape on it. I guess GM knows this is a problem. He has to road test, then read the codes again. Hopefully, that will be it. I will post final results.

Re: Engine Stops

Sry,
Nothing new yet. Car still has the same issues. The exhaust smells bad too. But it did before. Check engine light is on. Common occurance code is p1441
= Vacuum sys. purge during non-purge Right now I am researching that. I have had possible results, but none proven.

Next thing I have to do is, disconnect one of two cam shaft sensors, then reconnect and disconnect the other one. If it runs better on one than the other, than that one is bad.

Sry, i don't have much to go on at this point. I haven't had much time to mess with it lately. Hopefully I can get some real answers soon.
