Change spark plugs
I have a 2000 Grand Am SE that is overdue for a tune up. What I was wondering is how hard it is to change the plugs? I was thinking about taking it to a mechanic but haven't had time lately. Someone told me I would have to probably get new boots or something for each plug. Most I ever done on it is change the fuel pump and alternator.
How hard would it be to do and what all should I change while I'm at it? I've only done normal maintenance(oils, filters, ect) since I had it. Thx |

Re: Change spark plugs
You engne sixe would help...
Since you said "boots" I would assume you have a 4 cylinder. Its pretty easy, remove the top engine cover. Pull off the boots, and thier are the 4 plugs. Much easier then changing a fuel pump

Re: Change spark plugs
sorry about that yeah its a 4 cylinder. A mechanic gave me a list of things I would likely need including a new coil pack(is it?), boots, plugs, ect. He said the boots are sometimes hard to get off. So its as simple as changing these things and putting the cover back on? He was gonna charge $218 for parts, labor and all. But he was changing a few things not just the plugs.
Is there anything else I should change while I got the cover off. It does have 141k on it and has never had anything like this changed since I've owned it at around 85k. |

Re: Change spark plugs
I wouldnt change the ICM or the coils unless you are having troubles. If its not broke, dont fix it

Re: Change spark plugs
k so I should just change plugs and boots? Pretty much it would be hard to damage anything as long as I take my time and don't rush? Should I disconnect the battery or anything before starting?

Re: Change spark plugs
I would stick with AC delco Iridiums.
.... boots I'm not aware of any one thats better then the other. I would stay away from Bosh platnums, they dont last very long.
