1996 S-10 Idle Dropping Off
Frequently the idle on my 1996 S-10 2.2L 5 Speed drops off to almost stalling, then revives itself. This only happens when coasting up to a light and as soon as I get below 22 mph, it idles normal (around 850 rpm). There is no "Check Engine" light associated with this, and it runs fine otherwise.
- Any ideas what it could be? |

Re: 1996 S-10 Idle Dropping Off
In my experience, a stalling toward a light indicates to me that the fuel filter is bad. There are varying degrees to how bad a fuel filter can alter the driveability of an engine, but it is a cheap part and worth changing anyhow, even if it's not it. Simple tune-up parts cure most problems than major deficiencies.
Hope this helps. |

Re: 1996 S-10 Idle Dropping Off
Thanks, I didn't really consider that because it runs O.K. at highway speeds, but I'll get one and let you know if that fixed it.

Re: 1996 S-10 Idle Dropping Off
Another common cause is a failing or gummed up idle air control valve or port - on side of throttle body and to get to the torx screws have to pull off - port requires cleaning with spray and a toothbrush to clean and the IAC costs about $75 for a standard motors one (good quality) but avoid Wells brand or use GM dealer parts but about $130.
